Apple AR/VR headset may come with this eye-scanning feature – Times of India
Apple’s mixed reality headset may come with an iris-scanning feature to be used in the same way as the FaceID biometrics system is used on iPhones and iPads, as per a report by The Information. The feature is reportedly going to be called ‘Iris ID’ and can be used to authenticate payments or log into accounts without the need for a password. Plus, the feature would enable seamless user switching too, claims the report.
The way it can work is that whenever the headset is put on by a user, it is able to scan the iris of the wearer and instantly log them in to their respective accounts. Or you could say that a person’s iris is going to function as a password, a concept that has been featured in several science fiction films.
The headset may log out of the user accounts as soon as it is taken off. When a new user, let’s say, someone from the family or a friend, wears it, the headset will use their iris data to log them into their accounts.
Foveated rendering
As per the report, the iris scanning tech will use the same cameras that will enable foveated rendering which makes the headset continuously track the eye motion of the user to optimise the performance. For example, the areas that are not in the focus of the eyes will be rendered in lower resolution, while the areas in focus will be provided with the best quality resolution possible with the device.
Other predictions
The report also added that the Apple headset will have a very different design when compared to the newly announced Meta Quest Pro. The headset is expected to come in a body made of mesh fabric, aluminium and glass, and thus, may get a more premium look than the Quest Pro The report also claimed that the Apple headset is going to be lighter than the Quest Pro and will allow prescription lenses to be magnetically attached inside should the user need those.
