Train Like a Pro: How Lori Harvey Stays Strongs and Finds Balance
“I think when I was trying to lose fat, I definitely had to figure out what my BMI is, what my caloric intake is to maintain or [be in a deficit]…I had to figure out my rhythm and the pattern that works for my body. Now, I’ve found what works for me.”
Perhaps the most exciting part of hearing Lori Harvey unravel her journey is her acknowledgment that, well, it is one. While many influencers may credit ‘I woke up like this’ genetics or skinny teas, Harvey is the first to admit that her physique is the result of discipline. It’s not the result of some six-week challenge, unattainable personal trainer-nutritionist combo, or overnight wonder procedure. For Harvey, it’s always been a matter of consistency, adhering to the same set of practices in order to achieve holistic wellness — day in, day-out. “I really, really did work hard for this, so for that to be a conversation is a cool moment.” Below, Harvey breaks down the non-negotiables to feel her best.
It’s All About Balance
The biggest thing for me is that I don’t really try to restrict myself too much on what I eat, but I will portion control, which I found helps me a lot more. When I dieted and was super restrictive, it got hard—I craved the stuff that I’m ‘not supposed’ to be eating even more. And then, when I did start eating [normally] again, I’ll go a little bit too hard. So the portion control helps me balance. I love a great meal. I still like to eat great food; that’s where the portion control came in. I’ll go to dinner and all my friends are like, “Let’s get a drink,” and I’d rather have water, but I’m definitely going to have dessert after dinner. I’d rather eat my calories than drink my calories. I always have to have something sweet after my meals.
Find the Fitness Routine For You
I was always just trying to figure out what workout works the best for my body. I got into a horseback riding accident, so [protecting my joints] was something that I struggled with. The older I get, I start feeling it more and more. I think I’ve tried almost every type of workout there is; lots of cardio, a lot of weights. So it was really the heavyweight lifting that was starting to take a toll on my knee and my back. So then, once I pivoted to pilates, I was like, okay. I just felt I found my group and I was like, okay, I think this is what works best for me, and it gave me the definition I wanted. It’s a lifetime of figuring out what works, our body is always changing.
Self-Care Is Self-Confidence
Every day I do my five-step system from my line (SKN by LH), but I do have a little hack that I put on TikTok that actually went viral, which was my Greek yogurt mask the next day — 0% fat Greek yogurt, the lactic acid lifts the pigmentation out. Also, a cute workout set is great [motivation], clothing that hugs the body perfectly and is comfortable and cool. It all helps me with how I feel about myself, regardless of how anybody else feels about how I look. So I would say just having the inner self-confidence helps balance everything out. [Regarding mental health] I’m in therapy. I think everybody should be in therapy. I think self-work is never-ending.
Build—and Embrace—Boundaries
I think having my dad already be in the spotlight helped me navigate a lot because he had a lot of really great advice. He helps keep me level headed, keep me grounded. I would say my family and friends are a great foundation and support system for me to stay level-headed and grounded. When it does get a little bit overwhelming, I’ll go home for a little bit and it recenters me. I remember who I am and block out the naysayers. I stay focused on my goals, journey, and what I want to do. It is tough, but something my dad always told me is not to let people’s opinions really get to me. Having a great support system comes into play as it helps me block out any negativity and focus on the good.
Stay Inspired By Your Goals
My definition of success is just knocking out goals of mine that I’ve set every single day. Because every day, it is a task—you’re met with different challenges. So just being able to wake up and achieve different goals that I’ve set for each and every day, but just also life goals. I’m actually getting back into horse riding now, which is something I’ve been missing. So I’m really, really excited about that one.
