Get your Hawkins fix from this Stranger Things-themed café in Japan
While fans wait for the fifth and final season of the hit show, they can make a trip to a new Strangers Things themed café in Japan’s Shibuya district.
Created in partnership with restaurant chain Pronto Corp, the Stranger Things themed eatery is designed in tandem with the show, with the ice cream shop Steve Harrington works at converted into a prop, as in the creepy Upside Down, where Will was lost in the very first season and where Vecna is beaten in Season 4.
The café goes all out with the theme, with the 80s themed soundtrack a constant presence with hits like Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill’ playing among other tracks.
While the décor and atmosphere are all eerily similar to the Netflix show, the similarities do not end there. The establishment has ensured that customers’ suspension of disbelief will remain intact by making its food also match the theme. Menu items include a replica of the monster’s head from the upside down as well as the waffles Eleven likes.
To reduce the risk spreading COVID-19, now battering Japan in record infections, the café requires visitors to make a reservation and only about 20 are allowed inside every hour.
“Every day at midnight, I have been trying to book a table on my phone,” 29-year-old mother Kimiko Nakae told Reuters.
“Finally there’s an opening today because someone had cancelled the reservation,” Nakae adds.
Tokyo has a long tradition of themed restaurants and cafes, featuring everything from ninja waiters and exotic animals to vampire-inspired cuisine and the Hawkins theme restaurant is another addition to the pantheon.
