Next-gen USB 4 version 2.0 announced: Here’s what it means for users – Times of India

The next version of the USB standard promises to be faster than the Thunderbolt 4, offering the fastest speeds we have ever seen. The USB promoter group announced a new standard for USB, the USB 4 version 2.0, which brings some substantial speed gains over its predecessor, the USB 4.
The USB 4 version 2.0 doubles the speed of what the USB 4 is capable of, 40 Gbps to an expeditious 80 Gbps. This is even faster than Thunderbolt 4 offers, which is again 40 Gbps, making USB 4 version 2.0 one of the major upgrades in years.
Here’s how USB 4 version 2.0 achieve its speed
The USB promoter group says that the next-gen standard comes with an updated physical layer based on the existing USB-C passive cables while adding new active cables in USB 4 version 2.0, offering speeds of 80 Gbps.
Further, the USB 4 version 2.0 has been updated to feature the DisplayPort 2 and PCIe Gen 5. Moreover, the new version comes with a bandwidth boost for USB 3.2 data tunnelling, pushing speeds beyond 20Gbps, while using DisplayPort mode.
Similar to the previous iterations of the USB standard, the USB 4 version 2.0 will be backwards compatible, including all the revisions. Moreover, users will be able to get the speeds of the next-gen USB standard even with a USB 4 cable.
However, the USB 4 version 2.0 is not coming soon for many of us, as the USB promoter group says it is “specifically targeted to developers at this time.” The final branding and marketing guides will be updated later for certified products and cables.
