How One Vogue Editor Transitioned Her Wardrobe From Summer to Fall
In today’s edition of What I Wore This Week, Alexis Bennett shares her past 5 days—it’s a series of layered looks that featured cardigans, vests, and even a swimsuit.
Usually, the end of summer brings about feelings of sadness, but after a return to some semblance of normalcy (masks and social distancing indoors are still super important), I’m feeling a sense of gratitude and cautiously optimistic about what’s to come this fall. After nearly two years of a traveling hiatus, I finally had the opportunity to return to Europe with my husband, and, of course, I brought along with me a host of magical outfits to mark the occasion.
With end-of-the-season traveling and a return to the office this autumn top of mind, here’s how I mixed fantastical summer separates with practical fall-ready essentials for the seasonal shift.
Monday
Whenever I’m flying, I try to be as comfortable as possible—especially for this 12-hour flight to Berlin. That means no stiff jeans for me or anything too short that could leave me freezing cold on the frigid plane. So I opted for my stretchy flared-leg leggings from Spanx. I know, they look like trousers, right? Come fall, they’ll be a staple in my relaxed, return-to-the-office wardrobe along with this pretty Rebecca Taylor cardigan. Usually, I gravitate towards neutrals, but I couldn’t say no to this fun apple green hue. For shoes and accessories, I added a bit of texture with these suede Cariuma sneakers and my pearl and crystal necklace created by Emri Studio.
Tuesday
During the last days of summer, I always try to squeeze in a few more opportunities to wear short shorts and strappy sandals as much as possible. I love a crisp, tailored design—like this pair I bought from Zara a few years ago—because it instantly elevates any summery look. And I could walk for days in these comfortable low-heeled shoes. To finish off the look, I whipped out my thrifted sleeveless vest. It’s one of my favorite fall trends, and it also looks good layered underneath a turtleneck or a button-up blouse. These ‘70s-inspired frames by Aperçu and my dear friend Laurence plus this magical ring from ManLuu solidified the outfit.
Wednesday
This fall, I’m making a fashion vow to avoid boring sweaters and to test out playful knits, similar to this Ulla Johnson swirly, space-dyed tank. As a sucker for white denim—in my opinion, it’s an upgrade from its blue brethren—I went with a high-low look and styled the top with this “Feels Like a Steal” Target skirt. In the evenings, the weather dipped slightly below 70 degrees, and to me, that’s a bit too cold to have exposed shoulders. So I wrapped my Vogue sweater around my neck to protect my arms from the nightfall’s crisp breeze. All this look needed was a minimalist pair of sandals, and I was out the door for some sightseeing and a rooftop dinner.
Thursday
As of late, I’ve been adding quite a few matching sets to my closet. I saw this hypnotic swirl two-piece by Jaded London, I couldn’t resist it. Again, the transitioning weather forced me to cover up a bit more, hence the addition of this ultra, soft Theory cardigan. Not to be cliché, but these comfortable Gucci slides were made for walking, and paired perfectly with the JW Pei bag I’ve had for a few years now.
Friday
In an effort to spend as much time outdoors as possible, walks through a nearby park and a visit to the pool were at the top of our to-do list. And I found the perfect outfit for both activities. I layered this oversized Marimekko shirt, which will certainly get a lot of wear come fall, over my swimsuit and a ruched ASOS skirt. My puffy Neil J. Rodgers slides feel like little pillows for your feet, so I slipped those on along with a thrifted basket bag to top off the look.
