CHENNAI: M Shahrukh Khan has made a name for himself with his big-hitting skills and played the role of a finisher to perfection on numerous occasions. However, the 27-year-old has turned things around for his team — Kovai Kings — with the ball at the ongoing TNPL-6.
Off-spinner Shahrukh defended 9 runs off the last over against Nellai Royal Kings. Shahrukh not only dismissed the in-form Sanjay Yadav but also accounted for Athisayaraj Davidson — giving away just three runs and bagging two crucial wickets. That over and the eventual win helped Kovai seal their spot in the playoffs.
In 7 games this season, Shahrukh — skipper of Kovai Kings — has taken 10 wickets with best figures of 4 for 14. With Kovai’s top-order in good touch, Shahrukh’s hasn’t had much to do with the willow.
Shahrukh conceded that he has been working on his bowling in recent months. “Having two skills (batting and bowling) is always an advantage. I was bowling well in the U-19 and U-23 levels. I have been working on my bowling a lot more in the last seven to eight months. It is coming off well now. I am thankful to be able to pull off games for the team,” said Shahrukh on the eve of the Eliminator against Madurai Panthers in Salem.
Shahrukh revealed that a shoulder injury had restricted his bowling. Having gained full fitness, Shahrukh is fine-tuning his bowling skills. “I have been working on conventional off-spin and on having one stock ball. Whether it is white-ball cricket or red-ball cricket, I just want to spin the ball as much as possible. If I can spin the ball well out of my hand, the ball and the wicket (pitch) will do the rest. That is what my process has been,” Shahrukh pointed out.
On the knack of excelling in crunch situations, Shahrukh said, “I like matches where there is pressure. In games like these, the most important thing is to keep your cool. I like to do well in all these games. I have been doing it for quite some time now. Hopefully, I will do it in the future as well.”
