Chelsea have an agreement with Inter Milan that would see £97.5m flop Romelu Lukaku stay in Italy for a second year.

After a deeply underwhelming and, at times acrimonious, season at Stamford Bridge the striker headed back to the San Siro.

Inter, from whom Chelsea resigned Lukaku for a club record fee, paid around £7m to take the 29-year-old – who helped them win Serie A in 2020-21 – for the forthcoming campaign.

Romelu Lukaku has rejoined Inter Milan on a loan deal after a disappointing year at Chelsea

The forward scored 15 goals last season but issues arose when he claimed he was unhappy

Lukaku isn't wanted in Thomas Tuchel's side but his wages prevented a permanent departure

The forward scored 15 goals last season but issues arose when he claimed he was unhappy, leading to him being phased out of Thomas Tuchel’s starting XI at Stamford Bridge

However, he is understood to have no future at Stamford Bridge despite penning a five-year contract and Sportsmail understands there is already an agreement ‘in principle’ to extend the loan deal for another year.

Chelsea would have preferred a permanent departure for Lukaku who, despite a turbulent season in which he declared he was ‘not happy’ before Christmas in a now-infamous interview, he netted 15 times across all competitions.

At north of £200,000-a-week his wages, however, were a huge stumbling block.

According to reports in Italy, the Belgium striker has been placed onto a special diet after he turned up overweight at the San Siro outfit.

Lukaku underwent similar treatment after he initially joined the Serie A side from Manchester United, where he also endured a miserable time.
