Crop Tops, Doc Martens, and Miniskirts? This Is a Whole New Natalie Portman
At 41, and with a string of Hollywood films under her belt—not to mention an Oscar, two Golden Globes, and a BAFTA—Natalie Portman knows how to dress for the spotlight. Frothy gowns were once her go-to, but recently, the mother of two has orchestrated something of a style reboot. Currently promoting Thor: Love and Thunder, Portman has brought a fresh, youthful energy to her appearances—crop tops and Doc Martens included.
Polish designer Magda Butrym—whose fashion-forward fans include Hailey Bieber, Emily Ratajkowski, and Lady Gaga—appears key to Portman’s updated wardrobe. For the premiere of Pachinko, the actor wowed in a striking red minidress and matching tailored blazer, souped-up with Anita Ko jewelry and a Dior Caro bag. The bold shade was sexy, but the silhouette kept things classic and elegant.
Butrym was also behind the LBD Portman wore on Jimmy Kimmel Live, which featured a corsage flower at the neck and a cut-out chest, as well as the crochet bra that peeped from beneath her candy floss-pink Miu Miu separates at a Thor photo call in Rome.
Each premiere and press junket on the promo trail has seen Portman deliver an unexpected look. Perhaps inspired by her co-star Tessa Thompson, who is famously a fashion risk-taker, Portman has sought out outfits as impactful as her character’s superpowers.
For further evidence of Portman’s new direction, see the puffy mini she chose for the London premiere for Thor, which she styled with a floral crown that was reminiscent of her Black Swan days, or the sequined Celine minidress she wore on the LA leg of the tour.
Her most surprising choice? The Clueless-inspired checked skirt and blazer—both by Dior—that she wore over a sliver of a crop top to join Thompson at a junket. Portman channeled the ’90s classic’s lead character Cher Horowitz, while Thompson’s outfit had shades of her BFF, Dionne.
We’re watching Natalie’s evolving wardrobe with interest. More Magda, please.
