Actress Sai Pallavi’s comments on religious tensions draw flack online

Sai Pallavi, the Telugu actress who has starred in blockbusters like Premam, Kali, Fidaa, Athiran, and MCA-Middle Class Abbayi has found herself in the midst of a controversy. During an interview with Great Andhra, a YouTube channel, the actress was quite honest in her comments where she drew a parallel with the Hindu-Muslim divide on religious hatred.

Her comments about fanaticism in religion, wherein she spoke about the fact that the Kashmir genocide of Hindus was similar to cow vigilantism where a Muslim man was killed in the name of religion. She was denouncing both religious attitudes where people have feelings of hatred for no apparent reason and hurt each other on religious lines, which in her point of view is unacceptable.

These comments were made during the promotions for her upcoming film “Virata Parvam” in Telugu. She continued to say that she was taught to be a good human being, having grown up in a neutral family. As a child, she was taught to protect the socially oppressed people irrespective of their religious background. She reached out with this message to the people of India and her fans.

Her comments drew mixed responses on social media, where she has been both condemned and praised. Some were of the opinion that Kashmiri Pandit killings were an act of genocide and cannot be equated with the random killing of Muslims for transportation of cows and their apparent slaughter. Others praised her for her words during this sensitive period and said she was speaking the truth.

The movie “Virata Parvam,” which stars Sai Pallavi and Rana Duggabati, directed by Venu Udugula, is expected to hit theatres on June 17, 2022.
