Astros place Jose Altuve on injured list with hamstring strain
The left hamstring strain that Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve suffered during Monday’s 8-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels will keep the seven-time All-Star out of action for more than just a few games.
Per ESPN and The Associated Press, Houston has placed Altuve on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Tuesday because of the issue he endured while running to first base in the eighth inning of Monday’s contest. He missed Tuesday’s 7-2 loss to the Angels because of the injury.
“He was disappointed and he apologized, which you don’t have to, but that’s the kind of guy he is,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said of Altuve before Wednesday’s matchup versus the Angels. “Sometimes you can’t help it. This guy’s been a rock. He’s played every day for a number of years, and hopefully he didn’t hurt it too badly, and he’ll be all right hopefully within a couple of weeks.”
In a corresponding roster move, Houston recalled infielder J.J. Matijevic from Class AAA Sugar Land. Per Matt Young of the Houston Chronicle, Matijevic was hitting .310 with four home runs and 10 RBI in 11 games before this development.
Altuve, meanwhile, was hitting .167 with a homer and three RBI across nine contests before this setback.
