Bhupesh Baghel, Amit Shah discuss funds for LWE-hit Areas

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday met Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel and discussed the deployment of security forces and expansion of road network in districts affected by Left Wing Extremists (LWE). Baghel raised the impact of GST on the resources of the state. Shah assured all possible help to the state’s needs.

Of the 10 LWE-affected states, Chhattisgarh reported 50% (255 of the 509 country-wide) incidents in 2021. As many as 14 districts in Chhattisgarh are covered under the security related schemes (SRE).

“Baghel sought to resume a special assistance for the seven worst-affected districts and deployment of two more battalions of CRPF in Bastar and the formation of another ‘Bastariya’ battalion,” according to a statement by the Chhattisgarh administration. “Discontinuing GST compensation will impact the state. If funds are not available for the development work in Naxal-affected states, it will have a great impact on the state’s economy,” the statement stated. Home ministry officials said Rs 1,386.88 crore have been allocated to Chhattisgarh in the last five years.

Under the road requirement plans, 4,485 km of roads have been sanctioned in two LWE specific schemes for Chhattisgarh, of which 3,081 kms of roads have been constructed while 525 mobile towers have been established and work order for another 971 has been issued. Baghel suggested the setting up CRPF’s forward launching bases and deploying an additional 13 battalions to plug the “security vacuum” between Abujmad and Indravati in Bijapur.
