The Kansas City Chiefs caught some fans off guard trading Tyreek Hill, but the cap space they opened up could land them Stephon Gilmore.
By trading star wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins, Chiefs GM Brett Veach was essentially asking fans to trust him.
Not only did Kansas City get a bunch of draft picks in the trade, but they cleared cap space to invest in other positions.
One of those positions is cornerback, where the team needs help after letting Charvarius Ward and Mike Hughes walk away in free agency.
Chiefs could add Stephon Gilmore with Tyreek Hill cap space
According to Jordan Schultz, the space the Chiefs saved in the Hill trade could come in handy as the team pursues free agent cornerback Stephon Gilmore.
Gilmore was a Pro Bowler for the fifth time in six years this past season despite playing only nine games due to injury.
The 31-year-old cornerback has a track record of success, even if his recent injury history is a worry.
Spotrac lists Gilmore’s market value at $28 million over two years, averaging $14 million per year. Reports have suggested he’s looking for something more like $15 million per year, so negotiations would still have to iron out some details.
Still, it’s pretty clear the Chiefs can afford to bring in Gilmore if they want.
Schultz also reported that KC is interested in trading for Giants cornerback James Bradberry, so there are options on the table. The team just needs to figure out which scenario suits their needs best.
