Meesho files criminal complaints against fraudulent users

Social commerce platform Meesho has filed criminal complaints against fraudulent users who have sent unconsented orders to their customers, cofounder Vidit Aatrey wrote on microblogging platform Twitter on Wednesday.

“We have a no-tolerance policy towards any misuse on the Meesho platform,” Aatrey wrote. He added that the company will work with local authorities to bring the “perpetrators to justice.”

Meesho has filed complaints in both Kolkata and Bangalore,
it announced in a blog post. The company claims that unconsented orders account for only 0.01% of its total order volume, which according to Aatrey is in millions per day.

The company will also implement measures at the backend to avoid any recurrence in the future, it said.

“Owing to our customer-first approach, we have resolved all complaints received regarding unconsented orders and processed refunds to affected users,” the company’s blog post read.

Following the news report, Aatrey announced a series of steps including the appointment of Deloitte to conduct a forensic audit and investigate this issue.

Meesho is the most dominant player in India’s burgeoning social commerce space that allows entrepreneurs, most of whom are women, to sell products to consumers on social channels like WhatsApp and Facebook.

“Recently, we saw complaints of unconsented orders reaching our customers,” Aatrey had written in Tweet earlier this month. “We are taking a No-Tolerance approach to these cases,” he had written.
