Floral chokers: A Y2K trend we love

Low-slung jeans, corset tops and chokers — Y2K fashion is back, and in a big way. One look at your social media feed and you know that the trends are all set to become bolder. And one example is the floral choker.

“Flower choker is a signature style of the Y2K fashion trend, when bold flowers were feminine, fun and playfully romantic. It’s a result of the fashion cycle that repeats itself, but with an upgrade or a change. Reviving from the early 2000s, the trend is resurging in its own unique way,” says designer Gautam Gupta.

In fact, the flower choker is a trend that makes a comeback every decade, albeit with a different twist. So, how is it this time round? “This season, it’s back in a very retro, goth and glamorous look, with a lace trim and a nice big flower. Keep in mind that it’s a very strong accessory. So, pair it with subtle colours. Opt for colour blocking, a cream silk shirt with black high waist or corseted pants, a black tie up on the neck with a hot pink or a red rose flower broach, and you are ready to party,” suggests designer Anjalee Kapoor.

Inspired by months spent in lockdown and an increasingly complex and digitised world, the Gen Z generation is looking back to simpler times for inspiration. The youth is reinterpreting the aesthetics of the era gone by with a new zeal, and there’s nothing like the Y2K floral choker to add that extra edge. It can be styled with everything from high-waisted pants, to a party bodycon dress.

Further, a floral emphasised dress can also be paired with a plain lace choker for ultra-femininity. “The chokers are being made from a variety of materials apart from fabric, which is bringing a change in style from the early fashion era of 1990s and 2000s,” adds Gupta.

However, Kapoor cautions the admirers of this trend: “A neck cuff with flowers will look better and stand out with plain colours. Otherwise it will get very busy with prints.” It’s time to embrace this fashion statement with some ’90s-inspired exuberance.
