West Indies v England: Hosts take lead as Nkrumah Bonner closes in on century in Antigua

West Indies take the lead against England as Nkrumah Bonner closes in on a century for the hosts before tea on day three of the first Test… with tourists also suffering injury blow following Mark Wood’s elbow issue

  • Jack Leach had Joshua Da Silva trapped lbw in the fifth over after lunch
  • Craig Overton then had Alzarri Joseph caught at fine leg by Ollie Pope
  • However, Nkrumah Bonner and Kemar Roach then put on a 40-run stand
  • Mark Wood will not be able to bowl for the rest of the innings due to elbow issue

West Indies surpassed England’s score of 311 to hold an 11-run lead against the visitors at tea on the third day of the first Test.

England only managed to pick up Jason Holder before lunch, but their wait for a wicket ended in the fifth over after lunch, with Jack Leach going after Joshua Da Silva’s stumps and picking him up lbw for 32.

There was a short wait for DRS to confirm the umpire’s decision, but the ball was destined for leg stump leaving no hope for Da Silva.

Having opened up an end England quickly snared another, with Alzarri Joseph springing a fairly transparent plan when he hooked Overton high to fine-leg where substitute fielder Ollie Pope took the catch.

At 282 for seven, things has picked up for the tourists, but soon enough there was more bad news to follow after an England and Wales Cricket Board spokesperson confirmed Mark Wood was receiving treatment on his right elbow.

The 32-year-old is not expected to bowl again in the innings. Things were not that much better on the field either, with Bonner – who finished the session on 98 not out –  and Kemar Roach sharing a 40-run stand as the hosts finished on 322 for seven.

Earlier on, Ben Stokes won his battle with fellow all-rounder Jason Holder, making a crucial breakthrough in his second over on day three, having Holder caught behind for 46 and ending a frustrating stand of 79 with Bonner.

At that stage the hosts were five down and still 105 behind, but England were unable to follow up as the Windies chipped away to reach 271 for five at lunch.
