Will Colby Covington fight Kamaru Usman next?
Will Colby Covington be the next to challenge UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman? Don’t count on it.
The Colby Covington vs. Jorge Masvidal grudge match has come and gone, and it proved to be an easy night at the office for the man called “Chaos.” Covington cruised to a unanimous decision win in the main event of UFC 272.
After some initial defense from Masvidal, Covington managed to take him down and nearly scored several chokes. Masvidal fought back in a much closer round two, but Covington took Masvidal down and had his way once again in a dominant third round.
The fourth round saw both men rock one another, but Masvidal was too tired to follow up on the success, leading to another one-sided round in Covington’s favor to close out the fight.
Colby Covington unlikely next for Kamaru Usman after beating Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272, Leon Edwards previously confirmed as next title challenger
Even though Covington won this bout with ease and is surely going to remain the No. 1 contender in the welterweight rankings, it’s pretty certain he isn’t going to be next in line to challenge Kamaru Usman for the title.
The two just fought one another in November in the UFC 268 main event, with Usman winning a close decision. Usman also successfully defended the belt against Covington via fifth-round TKO at UFC 245. Usman also has two successful title defenses against Masvidal.
Covington has a different idea for his next opponent anyways, using his post-fight mic time to call out Dustin Poirier. Fighting the winner of the upcoming Gilbert Burns vs. Khamzat Chimaev fight also isn’t a farfetched idea for the matchmakers.
UFC President Dana White has previously stated that Leon Edwards is almost certainly going to be the next challenger for Usman whenever Usman is booked to defend the belt later this year. It is possible, however, that the Burns-Chimaev winner could also get the shot.
