Gushue’s big steal propels Canada past USA and back into win column
Canada’s Brad Gushue got back into the win column big-time with a 10-5 victory over John Shuster of the United States during the Sunday morning draw in Beijing at the Winter Olympic Games.
The 2006 gold medallist, Gushue improved to a 3-2 record in the Olympic men’s curling tournament after back-to-back losses to Switzerland and Sweden.
Already ahead 1-0, Gushue stole four critical points in the second end when Shuster’s last rock needed to hit on the nose but didn’t curl enough and rolled out upon contact.
After singles back and forth, Gushue stole another one in the fifth end to hold a commanding 7-1 lead at the break. It looked like the game was heading for early handshakes, however, Shuster pulled out an incredible in-off shot in the sixth end to score three points from out of nowhere to cut down the deficit.
That was as close as Shuster would come to close the gap. The teams traded single points in seven and eight and Gushue scored a deuce in nine to ice the game an end early.
Gushue’s next game is against Italy’s Joel Retornaz on Monday at 1:05 a.m. ET.
The Canadian women’s curling team, skipped by Jennifer Jones, will also look to rebound when they take on two-time reigning world champion Silvana Tirinzoni of Switzerland later Sunday (1:05 a.m. ET). Jones holds a 1-2 record with a win over South Korea and consecutive losses to Japan and Sweden.
