A Veil for Every Bride, From Celebrity-Favorites to Vintage Classics
In 2021, I encountered more than one best friend getting married who needed help sourcing a last-minute veil or finding one of the best wedding veils to shop online. Whether meticulously planning a fall wedding or a chill pizza party, “for a lot of brides that I work with, veils are usually the last thing that they think about,” says Anny Choi, head stylist for the wedding registry and inspiration platform Over The Moon. There’s something about fashion’s favorite cake-topper that incites procrastination. Choi shares that there are “so many times I’ve had to place a rush order.” The desire for a face framed by sheer tulle or silky floral headpiece eventually strikes for what she considers “the most popular” item her clients want to incorporate into their wedding wardrobe, second only, perhaps, to heirloom jewelry. And even for relaxed “non-bride” brides, “in most cases, Choi reports, “we find a fun veil to style with these unconventional looks to make them stand out and feel special.”
The best fit matches the model: “Even though my Latin roots kept telling me I needed a big wedding, with an even bigger dress and the longest veil to go with it, I never thought of myself as a traditional bride,” says Los Angeles-based stylist and Studium VDLF founder Victoria De La Fuente Ayers, who eloped in Montecito a few weeks ago. “I had a Covid love story that gave me a baby and a husband, Adam, in one year—there was no time for big, there was only time for real,” she laughs. While searching for inspiration, De La Fuente stumbled across a photo by Juergen Teller of a cool bride giving a peace sign in a two-layer tulle veil that flipped her attitude. “I always thought of a veil as the pinnacle of tradition, yet now, it feels more rebellious,” she says. “And at six months pregnant, the word ‘conventional’ had gone out of the window—and all of a sudden, I knew I needed a veil.” Two days before the wedding, with a bespoke Juan Carlos Obando dress at the ready, she ordered a fingertip-length option from Amazon for less than twenty dollars.
This level of procrastination involved in finalizing a rich-with-meaning look is only natural. And while Choi notes the many times she’s had to expedite a special order “because a lot of veils are custom-cut to the person wearing it,” personalization can also be done at home, rather than spending months waiting. Jesseca Jones Donnelly, a resident vintage expert for the luxury offerings of What Goes Around Comes Around, scouted out an indie Etsy seller in Seattle who shipped a veil a couple of weeks before her ceremony. With a bit of hand-stitched blue velvet ribbon, it transformed into a cape version that could be worn over the shoulders. “In the end, it made me feel otherworldly and couture by changing up just those few things,” says Jones. And feeling as comfortable walking down an aisle as a Chanel couture runway is, in many ways, the most romantic style fantasy.
