More extreme weather is expected to hit Australia’s east coast where severe storm cells are threatening to form.

A huge slice of the Queensland coast is bracing for another bout of severe weather after a savage hailstorm left a northern NSW community with a with a massive clean-up task.

Severe storm cells are threatening to form from Townsville to Brisbane and into northern NSW and continue a remarkable run of savage weather.

Residents of Toormina near Coffs Harbour were belted by a freak supercell on Wednesday afternoon, with hail coating the town white and triggering more than 700 calls to emergency services.

“Terrible storm with hail golf size,” wrote resident Basia Meder on Facebook.

“Sadly my garden, hard 1 year work is completely shredded. All front fly screen damaged, broken window, water inside, wet carpet, no power, trees and shrubs without any green … sad …”

Residents were calling for a natural disaster to be declared as they rushed to repair broken windows, damaged roof tiles, and damaged homes as more wet weather threatens to fall.

“Snowing this time of year. different,” wrote Dallas O’Brien.

“Sure insurance will cover the infrastructure, but people will need to have time off work to sort all this out and keep their home safe in the mean time,” Kate Annabel said to local MP Gurmesh Singh.

It comes a day after a record-breaking hail – measuring 16cm across – hit regions of Central Queensland near Mackay.

The Bureau of Meteorology was warning of a slight to medium chance of showers and thunderstorms across much of Queensland on Thursday, increasing to a medium to high chance in the southeast.

There is a risk of severe thunderstorms about eastern districts south of Townsville.
