Jets’ Sauce Gardner on controversial penalty vs. Chiefs: ‘I can’t believe that’
The New York Jets have already endured a lot this NFL season, and now a controversial penalty may have cost them a win.
Late in the fourth quarter and trailing 23-20, Jets defensive back Michael Carter II appeared to intercept Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, which would have set up his offence with a drive to potentially tie or win the game.
However, the Chiefs remained in possession of the ball after a defensive holding penalty was called on Jets star corner Sauce Gardner.
Jets head coach Robert Saleh went ballistic on the referees after the controversial call and was given a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.
After the game, Saleh told reporters that he wouldn’t publicly comment on the call, but did confirm it was what he was upset about when he was flagged for the unsportsmanlike conduct.
Gardner, however, had a little more to say than his coach.
“It was the same thing that was happening all game, and they throw no flags” Gardner told reporters after the game. “(Mahomes) threw the ball outside the receiver, (Carter) was there to make the play, then they threw the flag.”

Gardner, one of the league’s young defensive stars, compared it to a game of pickup basketball when a player only calls a foul after he misses the shot.
“For me personally, that’s like when you play basketball one-on-one, and you go to lay the ball up and you miss, but then you say foul,” Gardner explained. “Like I can’t believe that.”
Mahomes would go on to take advantage of the call, bleeding the clock until he picked up a game-clinching first down to seal the win for his team.
Already down their star off-season acquisition Aaron Rodgers for the season, the Jets now fall to 1-3 in the ultra-competitive AFC East division.
If there is one positive to be taken from Sunday’s game, it was the play of backup QB Zach Wilson, who had his best game of the season against the Chiefs.
“If he plays like that, we’re gonna win a lot of football games,” Saleh said of Wilson’s play.
The Jets will look to get back on track against the 1-3 Denver Broncos in Week 5.
