It was a dramatic conclusion to the Ashes series, with the retiring Stuart Broad bowling England to a victory over Australia in the fifth Test.

The series, which has provided much entertainment this summer, ended 2-2.

England’s 49-run win means Australia will not have won a series in this country for 26 years by the time they next arrive here in 2027 – the longest drought in their history.

Only once before have Australia made more in the fourth innings at The Oval than their 334 here – that was in 2009, when they scored 348. They lost that game too.

No England seamer went for more than 3.59 an over, and no Australian went for less than 4.27. Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc all had the most expensive Test series of their careers.

All England’s seamers averaged 30 or fewer, with the exception of Jimmy Anderson, whose five wickets cost 85 – the worst series average of his long career.
