JOHANNESBURG – South African MMA powerhouse Dricus du Plessis has claimed his right to an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight title fight against Israel Adesanya at UFC 293 in September.

On Saturday, du Plessis took down Australian professional mixed martial artist Robert “The Reaper” Whittaker at UFC 290 in Las Vegas, booking himself a world title shot against Adesanya.

The South African cemented himself as the division’s top contender by beating the former champion in impressive fashion with a second-round stoppage.

Proving his championship credentials, du Plessis dropped Whittaker briefly with a right hand before unloading on him as he backed up against the cage, dropping him again with a body shot and teeing off with his hands to force the stoppage.

After the fight, middleweight champion Adesanya entered the cage and the pair shared an intense face-off before trading words.
