Hospitalized cameraman Pete Stendel speaks to Gunnar Henderson and Aaron Boone

Baltimore Orioles star Gunnar Henderson spoke to YES Network cameraman Pete Stendel on Thursday after his errant throw hit him in the face and left him hospitalized.

For a moment on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium, there were genuine fears for Stendel’s wellbeing. He was put on a cart and as he was being driven out the stadium, held up the peace sign to the thousands fans who cheered him back.

On Thursday, it emerged he had an orbital fracture but is out of hospital and back at home resting up.

‘Glad everything was OK,’ Henderson said after Thursday’s game, where he hit two home runs in a massive 14-1 win for his team at Yankee Stadium. ‘He just reached out and said “Don´t let it affect you in any way. Things happen.”‘

Yankees manager Aaron Boone also spoke to Stendel on Thursday. 

‘I’m glad he´s able to be at home resting,’ Boone said after his team’s defeat. ‘Obviously a very scary situation. 

‘I know I saw it in real time and it kind of freaked me out a little bit.’

Boone certainly looked ashen-faced when he was discussing Stendel after Wednesday’s game.

‘Very scary. Definitely praying for him,’ Boone said Wednesday. ‘It was good to see him coherent and raising his hand going off. 

‘I saw it pretty well right away and it was very scary. I didn’t see how he fell back but I knew what was possible falling back, on top of the impact of the velocity of the ball hitting him. 

‘And then seeing him initially move – a difficult scene there and just hoping he’s okay.’

Henderson’s throw sailed over 1st base – where Ryan O’Hearn tried to catch it – and it hit the cameraman Stendel at the bottom of the fifth inning.

Stendel was taken to hospital for further checks after receiving attention on the field

Stendel, it was later revealed by YES, was filling in as the cameraman on first base and was not originally planned to be there. 

He is best known on YES as the cameraman in the outfield who would run alongside a player rounding the bases when they’ve hit a home run.

Soon after he was taken off the field and headed to hospital, the players took their positions again and the game resumed.
