It has to be seen if UCC exempts matrilineal societies and Northeast India: Conrad K Sangma
Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) asked the Centre to thoroughly examine its decision to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and warned that if the Centre remains adamant then it may lead to protests as was witnessed during the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Bill.
Sangma said, “We will have to see if the UCC exempts matrilineal societies, scheduled caste and scheduled tribe and Northeast India. If this happens it will be okay however we have to see the draft and what is there in the draft.”
Last week Sangma said Uniform Civil Code goes against the actual idea of India itself.
NPP is an ally of BJP and is leading the coalition government in Meghalaya. It is supporting the BJP led government in Manipur.
“The Uniform Civil Code according to the NPP, I am talking from the party point of view, goes against the actual idea of India itself. India is a diverse nation and the diversity is what is our strength”. We are a matrilineal society and that is what our strength and culture has been now that cannot be changed for us. As a political party we realise that the entire North East as a matter of fact has got the unique culture and ways of our society and we want that to remain and we would not want that to be touched,” Sagma earlier said.He added, “The concept in its own is something that does not go with the entire idea of India being a diverse nation and diversity being our strength and identity and hence the uniform civil code will go against that idea is what the NPP feels.”KSU general secretary Donald V. Thabah said the Centre should take into account the customary laws and practices of the various tribal communities of the Northeast.
“The tribals in Meghalaya have their own customary practices on inheritance, maintenance, divorce, social norms, and marriage. The majority of the tribal population in Meghalaya follows the Christian faith and the Christian Marriage Act. It will definitely affect our customary practices which are very unique,” the KSU general secretary said.
The sixth schedule area Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in Meghalaya will hold a meeting with its legal counsel on Tuesday to discuss and finalise a draft petition to be submitted to the Law Commission of India expressing its opposition to the Centre’s proposal to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
Tipra Motha Party (TMP)chief Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barman said that he will he will in a position to comment on UCC after he has a looks of the draft.
