David Benavidez v David Morrell lined up for October or November | Boxing News
SUPER-MIDDLEWEIGHTS David Benavidez and David Morrell may not be fighting Canelo Alvarez any time soon, so they have opted for the next best thing.
The two David’s are set to collide in October or November according to Benavidez’ promoter Sampson Lewkowicz. Big Fight Weekend’s Dan Rafael reported the information on the latest edition of the BFW podcast.
“Sampson had told me that they are absolutely working towards and finalising a deal for David Benavidez to fight against David Morrell probably later this year, in the fall,” said Rafael.
“Maybe it slips over into the beginning of next year but most likely it’s going to be towards the latter part of this year.
“Talking to Sampson and I quote, ‘This is the plan. We don’t have anybody else and we have an agreement’. Maybe that agreement is not signed but they are making David Benavidez against David Morrell.”
Lewkowicz had recently gone public with his offer to Canelo Alvarez for a fight against Benavidez. However, the 32-year-old was hoping to land a rematch against Dmitry Bivol at light-heavyweight but with that possibility fading by the day the Mexican’s team are reportedly looking elsewhere. Cruiserweight Badou Jack and middleweight Jermall Charlo have been the names linked to the super-middleweight champion with interest in facing Benavidez appearing to be slim and none.
Having only fought nine times as a professional Morell has forged quite the reputation for himself. In April he delivered a brutal first-round knockout against Yamaguchi Falcao. A fight against Benavidez will prove how much of a threat the Cuban is to Canelo.
Benavidez is by far the more experienced of the two having fought three times the amount Morrell has. In March the 26-year-old notched up a career best win beating former Canelo opponent Caleb Plants on points.
