Rihanna simply makes her own rules when it comes to fashion. She hasn’t earned her title as a trendsetter by doing what everyone else does. She’ll emerge on the streets wearing looks that are entirely unexpected, yet still wholeheartedly chic. She was wearing cargo pants long before they came back into style, thanks to the Y2k revival. The star will also rock a fuzzy bucket hat with total ease. Her latest fashion proposal? Wearing a hoodie as a dress. And even better yet, somehow making it look dressy.

This weekend, the star emerged at her favorite Santa Monica restaurant, Giorgio Baldi, wearing the ensemble in question. She kept cozy in an oversized gray hoodie sweatshirt (perhaps from her own line, Savage x Fenty), which she wore as a dress and layered under a brown snakeskin coat. The result looked effortlessly cool, especially when paired with her signature strappy stilettos. She also gets bonus style points for the monogrammed Louis Vuitton top-handle bag that she carried. 

Worn on its own, the hoodie dress could easily read like you just rolled out of bed. But clearly, the right accessories and coat can instantly elevate the comfortable look and make it look polished. And sure, the hooded gown may be all the rage in Hollywood right now, but leave it to Rihanna to say it’s all about the hoodie dress instead. Yes, there’s a difference!
