Google Maps gets new routing model, lite navigation for cyclists coming soon – Times of India

Google Maps is getting new features that will allow users to make ‘greener choices’ while travelling. The tech giant has rolled out eco-friendly routing that will show the most-fuel efficient route to the users in addition to the fastest-route. This way users can choose the route that works best for them.
The feature was announced by Google via a blog post. It says that the new routing model not only gets you to your destination as quickly as possible, but also optimises for lower fuel consumption. It will also show the relative difference in fuel savings and the estimated time of arrival (ETA) to the users. In case the ETA is the same for the fastest and most-fuel efficient route, Google Maps will default to the latter to reduce carbon emissions.
The feature is right now available for Google Maps users in the US. It is rolling to both Android and iOS devices. It is expected to come to Europe in the next year along with other countries.
Coming soon: Lite navigation for cyclists
Google has also announced that it will bring lite navigation for cyclists in future. As per Google, use of biking directions on Maps have increased by up to 98% in cities around the world.
With lite navigation, cyclists will be able to quickly see details about their route without having to keep their phone’s screen on or enter turn-by-turn navigation. They will also be able to keep track of their trip progress and see ETA updates in real-time with a glance. Lite navigation will begin rolling out once cycling navigation goes live on Android and iOS in the coming months.
