After year-long ban, Krafton relaunches BGMI in India with limited playtime

Game developer Krafton said on Monday that its popular mobile game Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) has been relaunched in India but with limited playtime for adults and minors under 18 years.

Krafton had announced the relaunch on May 19, almost a year after it was taken down under Section 69 of the Information Technology (IT) Act

The game was available for download from May 27 for Android users and from Monday for iOS users. Play opened only on Monday.

“Starting today, May 27th, Android users can now begin preloading your favourite game from the Google Play Store. Although the game can be played starting from May 29th, it is now ready for preloading. If you are unable to pre-load immediately, relax. Over the weekend, you’ll eventually get the option. As for iOS users, you can download and start playing the game on May 29th,” reads a notification from the company that appears on the app.

A new notification that appeared on the app on Monday said: “You can now download the game and begin playing starting today. However, to ensure a smooth and seamless experience for everyone, the game’s playability will be rolled out in phases”.

The ban on the game has been lifted for 90 days, following which the government is expected to review whether it is in compliance with Indian laws and decide whether to lift the ban permanently or block it again.

Krafton has rolled out a 2.5 update for the game to bring a “refined and immersive experience for gamers”. Further, Krafton said playtime for users under 18 will be restricted to three hours, whereas, for other players, it will be six hours daily to “promote responsible gaming practices”. Parental verification and daily spending limits for minors will continue to be a part of the game.

BGMI’s earlier version, PlayerUnknown’s Battleground (PUBG), was first banned by the central government in 2020 along with 117 other apps with Chinese links. At the time, the game was distributed by Chinese tech conglomerate Tencent in India.

Prior to being banned, PUBG had around 33 million users in the country.

In November 2020, following the ban, PUBG Studios and South Korea’s Krafton registered PUBG India Private Ltd under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs to relaunch PUBG Mobile in India.

Later, in May 2021, Krafton announced the launch of BGMI, which was finally released on July 2, 2021 for Android devices and August 18 that year for Apple’s iOS devices. Over a year, BGMI managed to surpass 100 million registered users.
