Rahul Gandhi attacks PM Modi over action on wrestlers, says ‘crushing voices…’
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday attacked PM Modi over the manhandling of internationally acclaimed wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik by Delhi Police on the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Parliament of India. While calling the inauguration of Parliament the “coronation ceremony”, Rahul Gandhi said that the “arrogant king is crushing the voice of the public.”
The latest attack by Rahul Gandhi came as Delhi Police manhandled protesting wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia while they were moving towards the new Parliament building. The wrestlers were detained and the protest site at Jantar Mantar was also cleared.
Not just Rahul Gandhi, other Opposition leaders also condemned the police action against wrestlers.
“Strongly condemn the way Delhi Police manhandled Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, and other wrestlers. It’s shameful our champions are treated in this manner. Democracy lies in tolerance but autocratic forces thrive on intolerance and quelling of dissent. I demand they be immediately released by the police. I stand by our wrestlers,” West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted.
“Delhi Police have detailed women wrestlers! Medal-winning wrestlers bundled into buses and detained for fighting sexual harassment while man accused will be sitting in new parliament building. Shame!,” the Communist Party of India (Marxist) said.
“The most shameful video of Indian sports and democracy. I condemn the manner in which police dragged our gold medallist wrestlers who have brought laurels for our country and in this fight for truth and justice, I stand with my sisters,” Rajasthan Congress MLA and 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games discus throw gold medallist Krishna Poonia tweeted.
Congress is one of the 20 Opposition parties who have decided to boycott the inauguration ceremony as they objected to the decision of PM Modi to inaugurate the new Parliament building himself. The Opposition parties opined that as the head of Parliament, the President should get the honour of the inauguration.
Rahul Gandhi stepped up his attack on the government and in an earlier tweet said “Parliament is the voice of the people! The Prime Minister is considering the inauguration of the Parliament House as a coronation.”
