Unflinching Stars appear vulnerable as Golden Knights snatch victory in Game 2

When the Vegas Golden Knights scored their second overtime winner in as many games, it looked Sunday that they’d not only beaten the Dallas Stars again but might have broken them, too.

It wasn’t simply that the Knights went up 2-0 in the National Hockey League’s Western Conference Final when Chandler Stephenson scored uncontested on a rebound at 1:12 of overtime to give his team a 3-2 win on home ice.

And it wasn’t even that the Stars, who were lucky to make it to OT in Friday’s 4-3 Vegas win, were significantly better in Game 2 and appeared to have Sunday’s tight-checking contest under control until Jonathan Marchessault snatched a tying goal for the Knights with 2:22 remaining in regulation time.

The seismic shift for Dallas is that the unflinching Stars beat themselves, displaying vulnerability on a team that looked largely invincible this season when leading into the third period and bouncing back from losses.

The Stars had been 31-0-2 this season — and 8-0 in the playoffs — when leading with 20 minutes to go and, even more incredibly, were 22-1-3 since October with starting goalie Jake Oettinger when coming off a loss.

The Knights shattered that invincibility on Sunday.

For a road game under playoff-deficit pressure, the Stars couldn’t have played much better than they did for 50 minutes on Sunday, when they were outshooting Vegas 22-13. And the Knights, had they lost, would have been telling themselves they couldn’t have played much worse.

But here they are, Vegas up 2-0 as the series shifts to Dallas for Game 3 on Tuesday.

The Stars will be encouraged to have home ice where, bucking the trend for these playoffs, they are 5-2 and have won three in a row.

But after Sunday, there are some disconcerting things for them to think about — or try not to think about.

GAME OF MISTAKES

Stephenson’s winning goal came on a series of Dallas mistakes that began with a poor change-on-the-fly by Evgenii Dadanov and Wyatt Johnston, whose point-blank scoring chance about 35 seconds earlier had been stopped by Vegas goalie Adin Hill.

The sloppy change and poor dump-in by the Stars gave the Knights a four-on-three rush with little back pressure. Vegas winger Mark Stone said he could hear teammates on the bench yelling “time!”

Stone passed to Shea Theodore, whose unscreened shot from a distance was stopped by Oettinger. But the goalie lost track of the puck as it rebounded off his right pad and both Dallas defencemen, Colin Miller and Esa Lindell, converged at the top of the crease on Brett Howden, leaving Stephenson completely unimpeded as he located the puck and scored easily.

On the tying goal, veteran Stars’ defenceman Ryan Suter gathered a dump-in played to him by Oettinger but missed blue-line partner Miro Heiskanen with a pass behind the net. The puck went straight to Knight Ivan Barbashev, who relayed it to Jack Eichel. Eichel centred brilliantly to Marchessault, who scored after skating unchecked between Suter and Dadonov.

Until they were in the spotlight together on the tying goal, none of Eichel, Marchessault or Suter had been very noticeable. This was good only for the Dallas defenceman, who had played another quiet, steady game, helping shut down Vegas’ top players while picking up a couple of second assists.

But everything changed on that tying goal, which was bad only for Suter.

Other than an early chance from left wing and a dominant performance in the faceoff circle (16-6), Eichel didn’t look for 57 minutes like a $10-million franchise player. And Marchessault, so often an offensive catalyst for the Knights, did not register a shot until the 52nd minute. Both finished with less than 17 minutes of ice time.

Suter, the 38-year-old who has shown since his buyout by the Minnesota Wild two years ago that he is still a top-pairing NHL defenceman, finished with 24:56 of TOI.

“Obviously, it wasn’t the right play and it ended up costing us,” Suter told reporters at T-Mobile Arena.

NOT TYPICAL KNIGHTS

By far the league’s least-penalized team during the regular season, when they were shorthanded just 195 times, Vegas was uncharacteristically undisciplined in the second period, when Marchessault tripped Heiskanen behind the Dallas net at 7:47 and Stephenson took a retaliatory cross-checking penalty on Miller at 19:01.

The first of those penalties led to Jason Robertson’s power-play goal, his second in as many games after snapping a season-long eight-game drought, that broke a 1-1 tie at 9:21 of the middle frame.

But Dallas’ power play, the best of the playoffs Final Four at 30.4 per cent, could not capitalize on the second chance, which allowed Vegas to stay within one goal.

The Knights are the best five-on-five team in the playoffs and aren’t likely to take two dumb penalties in Game 3, which is another reason for them to feel especially buoyed about winning on Sunday.

HEISKANEN RESPONDS (KIND OF)

After an oddly lacklustre performance on Friday, Heiskanen was slightly better in Game 2.

The impact defenceman opened the scoring at 2:47 of the first period with a shot that hit the stick of Theodore and tumbled up and over Hill.

Heiskanen still did not drive five-on-five possession (expected goals-for of 39 per cent), but he finished with three shots and a couple of blocks in 28:19 of ice time and was not at fault on the tying goal when Suter’s bad pass trapped him.

DOMI DOES NOT (MOSTLY)

Dallas coach Peter DeBoer said before the game that he expected better from the trio of Max Domi, Tyler Seguin and Mason Marchment, the third-liners who went minus-three in Game 1.
