Mumbai to Navi Mumbai in 20 minutes: India’s longest sea bridge to be ready soon

The 16.5 km long deck of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Sea Link(MTHL) will be completed by May 25-26. Reportedly, vehicles will be allowed on the bridge after the entire deck for the sea link is laid. Once completed, Mumbai Trans Harbour Link will be the longest sea bridge in India and would cater to almost 70,000 vehicles. MTHL aims to connect Mumbai with Navi Mumbai in order to mitigate traffic congestion and promote economic development.

According to a report published in The Times of India, once the launch of the deck is complete MMRDA will focus on waterproofing, asphalting, and construction of crash barriers at the sea link. The authority will also start working on installing CCTV cameras, lampposts and toll infrastructure.

MTHL will be the first sea bridge in India to have an Open Road Tolling (ORT) system. Theoretically, the new system should allow commuters to drive past the toll booth at speeds of up to 100kmph without slowing down to pay the toll.

MMRDA is also planning on installing artificial intelligence-based cameras that are expected to reduce congestion on the road. The TOI report claims that AI-based cameras will allow the control room to be aware of vehicle breakdowns and the authorities can subsequently tow away the broken-down vehicles via the emergency lane.

Built at a cost of around 18,000 crore, MTHL will significantly reduce the travel time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. It will be possible to travel from Sewri in central Mumbai to Chirle in Navi Mumbai in 15-20 minutes. The 22 km long bridge will bring places like Goa, Pune, and Nagpur closer to Mumbai.

The project is being developed by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). MMRDA is a Maharashtra government agency, financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
