Tesla will have its ChaGPT moment no later than next year: Elon Musk

Exuding confidence in Tesla, CEO Elon Musk said that the electric car maker would soon have its “ChatGPT sort of moment” no later than next year. Musk said that Tesla’s AI capabilities are better than those of other firms such as Microsoft and Alphabet.

In an interaction with CNBC, Musk said, “Tesla has tremendous capability in the real world. It is far ahead of anyone (other companies).”

ChatGPT models by OpenAI, which Musk founded along with other scientists and engineers, have taken the internet by storm, forcing big tech giants such as Microsoft and Alphabet to accelerate the development of similar large language models, and other companies to integrate generative AI models into their products.

Musk added that he would be focusing especially on artificial intelligence at Tesla, which uses such technology for self-driving capabilities.

Earlier in the day, during a shareholder meeting, Musk issued a warning about the challenges before the global economy. “Tesla is not immune to the global economic environment. I expect things to be, just at a macroeconomic level, difficult for at least the next 12 months,” said the billionaire.Musk said the company would now advertise its vehicles. So far, Tesla, famously, has avoided paying for advertising, quite unlike its competitors. “We’ll try out a little advertising and see how it goes,” he said.

Musk also told the shareholders that the company’s “Full Self-Driving” software is getting close to where it’s safer than human driving.

Shareholders voted to place Tesla cofounder and former chief technology officer JB Straubel on the company’s board for the next three years. Straubel left Tesla in 2019 to start a battery materials recycling company.

The shareholders also re-elected Musk and Chairwoman Robyn Denholm to the board.

Musk also rebuffed rumours that he would step down as Tesla CEO.
