Is drinking cold refrigerated water bad for the heart? – Times of India
But how true is this statement?
We spoke to expert on this who explained to us how cold water affects our health and what are the dos and the don’ts associated with it.
“Drinking cold refrigerated water is a necessity in summer and in such hot weather. However, suddenly drinking large amounts of very cold and chilled water can actually have adverse consequences because of causing sudden vasospasm in the arteries. This happens more when you are taking a very cold shower or step into the cold shower immediately, not so much as drinking a glass of cold water,” explains Dr. (Col.) Manjinder Sandhu, Principal Director – Cardiology, Max Hospital, Gurugram.

“However, heart patients should be careful that they should not excessively drink cold water because it can trigger heart arrhythmias and may also cause vasospasm which may sometimes lead to heart attack,” the expert adds.
What is vasospasm?
Vasospasm is a condition where the blood vessels narrow and block the flow of blood.
Depending on whether they happen there are different types of vasospasms like coronary vasospasm, cerebral vasospasm, nipple vasospasm and vasospasm in fingers and toes.
Coronary vasospasm occurs mostly due to cold and is characterized by cardiac arrest, fainting, angina or chest pain and acute coronary syndrome.
Vasospasms which happen in fingers and toes due to cold are often seen changing the skin color and having a throbbing or tingling sensation.
So, cold or warm water?
Drinking water at room temperature is the best, several health experts say and stress that staying hydrated is the key.
Many Ayurvedic experts recommend having lukewarm water after meals in order to help with the digestive process.
One should be very careful about the hydration and do not wait till being thirsty because when you are thirsty you are already dehydrated.
One should check the color of the urine and if it is darker in color, even when you are not thirsty you should hydrate yourself.
Alternate sources of hydration
The sudden urge to have a cold drink can be reduced if you have alternate sources of hydration throughout the day.
One can get lots of water from fruits and vegetables which are rich in water content. For example, cucumbers, watermelon, or even a glass of buttermilk etc. can keep you hydrated throughout the day.
