Kevin McGrath – the much-loved father of Aussie cricket legend Glenn – has died following a battle with illness.

‘It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of my beloved father in law, Kevin James McGrath,’ Sara McGrath posted on Instagram on Wednesday.

‘He was a great dad, husband, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend. He was a compassionate, humble, caring and certainly always there when you needed him. 

‘He was a man of the land, tough as they come whose greatest pleasure was everyday waking up looking forward to working on his wheat and sheep farm. 

‘A gentleman in every way. When I arrived in Australia knowing only one person, my husband, my father in law welcomed me with open arms and heart. He was the best father in law I could have ever wished for.

‘In the last few months of his life I had the privilege to repay the love he had show me since we met. 

‘He will be thoroughly missed at the same time we are at peace that he is no longer suffering. Love u Kev.’

Former Olympian Kerri Pottharst led the tributes on social media.

‘I’m so sorry to hear. Sending massive love and hugs to all the family,’ the beach volleyball gold medallist at the Sydney Games in 2000 posted.

Kevin McGrath raised his family on a farm at Narromine in country NSW and it was where his son Glenn honed his craft as a talented junior cricketer.

Eventually the champion quick moved to Sydney to play at grade level for Sutherland before making his debut for NSW during the 1992–93 season.

Test honours quickly followed, with McGrath – who was very close with his father – soon becoming the spearhead of the Australian pace attack.

McGrath retired in January of 2007 with 563 Test wickets to his name.
