Apple’s mixed-reality headset may come with ‘MagSafe’ battery pack – Times of India

Apple is expected to unveil its long-rumoured mixed-reality headset this year at the WWDC. While there is lots of talk around the headset about what features it will bring, how it will work, and what it will look like. All the chatter aside, the headset may feature a Magsafe-like battery since it may not offer the best endurance of all the Apple products.
In the latest edition of his newsletter, Power On, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg shares some more information about Apple’s upcoming mixed reality headset.
As per Gurman, the mixed-reality headset, purportedly the “Reality Pro” or “Reality One,” will feature two ports — a “new proprietary charging connector.” and a USB-C interface for data transfers.
Gurman explains that the charging cable has a round magnetic tip that locks in place by rotating it clockwise to prevent it from falling out during use. The cable connects to the battery pack, which is similar in size to Apple’s iPhone MagSafe battery pack but thicker and is designed to provide approximately two hours of power.
The external battery will rest in the user’s pocket and connect to the headset via a cable, designed to reduce weight and improve comfort. Each battery pack will last about two hours and then can be charged via USB-C using the same adapter that comes with the MacBook Pro.
Earlier this year, Gurman had said that the mixed-reality headset would have an external power supply. Apple decided to go with the design to offload the battery due to concerns about the device overheating and a desire to make the headset lighter and more comfortable.
The anticipated Apple mixed-reality headset is expected to be a premium device constructed from materials such as glass and carbon fibre. It is rumoured to feature two 4K displays, one for each eye, along with a dozen sensors and cameras to enable precise hand gestures and eye tracking. The headset is also expected to be powered by Apple’s M2 chip, the same chip inside the MacBook Air. It is estimated that the headset will retail for around $3,000 (Rs 2,45,000).
