Born in Xigalo, Limpopo in 1938, Mabasa began sculpting in 1974. Noria Mabasa: Shaping Dreams was on display at Villa-Legodi Centre for Sculpture at NIROX Sculpture Park last year.
From traditional drums to pottery, murals and sculpture, art is present in all forms of Mabasa’s art.
Most of her work is centered on indigenous traditions of material culture production, particularly pottery and woodwork. Her art reflected her personal experiences and feelings related to apartheid and displacement, race, sex, and censure.
