Jurgen Klopp insists Liverpool were ‘outstanding’ in 6-1 win over Leeds

‘It’s the best game we’ve played this season!’: Jurgen Klopp hails Liverpool as ‘outstanding’ in 6-1 win over Leeds… and admits everything ‘clicked’ for the Reds as they ran riot at Elland Road

  • Jurgen Klopp was full of praise for his side after their 6-1 win against Leeds
  • The Reds took the win after goals from Cody Gakpo, Mo Salah and Diogo Jota
  • Afterwards, the Liverpool boss spoke of his side’s performance on the night

Jurgen Klopp insisted that Liverpool played the ‘best game’ of their season against Leeds on Monday, as they stormed to a 6-1 victory at Elland Road.

The Reds secured the massive Premier League win thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota on the night.

The result has kept their momentum alive for a place in Europe next season, whether that be the Europa League or the Conference League, and after the game Klopp insisted the result was ‘exactly what we wanted’.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: ‘[I enjoyed it] a lot! I think it’s the best game we’ve played this season, from all different perspectives.

‘It was a really good game, sensational goals. Counter-pressing-wise, [the] best game, [I was] close to saying [in] decades, but it was really long ago!’

Though the scoreline was impressive, it wasn’t their largest margin in the league this year. At the start of March, they thrashed Manchester United 7-0 at home.

‘My favourite situation is 92nd minute we lose the ball and four players chase the poor boy from Leeds, and that was absolutely outstanding,’ Klopp continued. ‘Exactly what we wanted.

‘To play good football, you need stability. You only get stability from defending. When you are in a negative flow, you always make wrong decisions.

‘I cannot really explain why our counter-pressing was not there, we are asking for it all the time but tonight it clicked.’

Throughout the match, Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota were finding luck down the channels and by the end both of them walked away with a brace.

One aspect of their impressive performances was the tireless running they did up-front in order to win the ball back.

‘We have too many situations where we have to run too much to get the ball back deep in our half, then we have to build again and tonight I’m not sure how many goals we scored after we won the ball back,’ Klopp reflected.

‘I think we know that, but there’s always a difference between knowing and really understanding and really feeling it, and I hope these one-and-a-half games give us the right sign for the rest of the season.’

There was controversy in the match, however, as the Reds were somewhat lucky to escape the wrath of VAR on the night.

Jurgen Klopp’s side took the lead through Cody Gakpo after 35 minutes, but the ball struck Trent Alexander-Arnold’s hand earlier in the move.

VAR ruled the incident was too early in the move to have an impact on the goal,  so the strike was allowed to stand to mass outcry from the home fans when replays were shown in the ground.

Later, Ben Mee said Liverpool’s goal should have been ruled out for a handball in the build-up, while Jamie Carragher felt the deicsion ‘could have gone either way.
