Phillies pitcher calls out new beer policies used by some teams

It was reported earlier this week that the Arizona Diamondbacks, Milwaukee Brewers, Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers were among the teams that have already decided to push the typical standard across ballparks of halting alcohol sales after the seventh inning to following the eighth inning. This was due to shorter games being played because of the new pitch clock.

“The reason we stopped hitting the seventh before was to give our fans time to sober up and drive home safe, correct? So now with a faster pace game, and me just being a man of common sense, if the game is going to finish quicker, would we not move the beer sales back to the sixth inning to give our fans time to sober up,” the Phillies southpaw said. “Instead, we’re going to the eighth, and now you’re putting our fans and our family at risk driving home with people who have just drank beers 22 minutes ago.”

In the early weeks of the 2023 season, the pitch clock rules have cut down the length of games by an average of about 30 minutes.

Brewers president of baseball operations Rick Schlesinger said last week that even with the team’s extension of alcohol sales into the eighth frame, they’re still probably selling the beverages for a shorter time than in 2022 due to the shorter contests.

“When you mess with billionaires’ dollars, to find a way to make their dollars back,” Strahm said. “My thing is, when you’re looking at the safety of your fans, that’s probably not the smartest decision to extend it into the eighth. And, again, just being a common sense thinker, I think as a fan of the game, and just looking out for people, it would make more sense he stopped the sales in the sixth.”
