  • Lockett booted 898 goals for Saints, is a club legend

A number of footy fans have voiced their concern for AFL great Tony Lockett after the legendary full forward looked gaunt at St Kilda’s recent 150th anniversary celebrations.

Lockett, 57, represented the Saints from 1983 to 1994 before linking up with the Sydney Swans – and is widely regarded as one of the code’s greatest ever players.

Notoriously private, Lockett posed for a number of photos at the MCG with the likes of fellow club greats Nicky Winmar and Brian Gleeson.

It didn’t long for Saints supporters on social media to convey their thoughts on the man affectionately known as ‘Plugger’.

‘Sorry but Tony doesn’t look well – is he OK,’ one supported asked, with another stating ‘he doesn’t look healthy….the Plugger I remember was a mountain of a man’.

A third said: ‘I was totally shocked when I saw him! He looks really sick. His face is so sunken and hollow.’

In 2019, Lockett addressed rumours about his dramatic weight loss at the time.

‘I’ve been training pretty hard, I’m taking part in the Tour de Cure [charity bike ride to raise money for cancer] with [TV personality] Mark Beretta,’ he told Triple M.

‘It ends up being nearly 1,300km in nine days, so it’s a fair ride.

‘So I’ve been on the bike nearly every morning….I don’t want to be carrying anything extra.’

There have been no reports that the footy legend is suffering any illness.

Lockett also stole the hearts of many after helping fellow St Kilda legend Neil Roberts onto the hallowed turf at the 150-year celebrations.

Roberts, 89, told other club greats at a pre-game Hall of Fame function ‘I’m not getting down to the green stuff’ [grass] – but Lockett was having none of it.

Lockett assisted the 1958 Brownlow Medallist every step of the way, and moments later the biggest cheer of the night was reserved for the man who booted 898 goals for St Kilda at the peak of his powers.
