  • Some fans believed it to be April Fools prank
  • Aussie artists performed at historic event

AFL fans have taken to social media to brutally roast a rendition of St Kilda’s theme song performed by Aussie musicians to commemorate the club’s 150th year.

St Kilda celebrated its historic milestone in style and maintained an unblemished start to the season with a gritty 18-point victory over Essendon – but the pregame entertainment had everybody talking.

The unusual acoustic version of the famous club song was performed by Dan Sultan, Alex Lahey, Ella Hooper and the Melbourne Gospel Choir.

Just under 70,000 fans, along with St Kilda greats including Tony Lockett, Ian Stewart, Ross Smith, Barry Breen and Nicky Winmar were in attendance for the occasion.

The performance had hardly finished before fans were piling in online, with some thinking it was an April Fools prank.

‘When your drunk uncle does karaoke,’ joked one fan.

‘Was that bloke having a stroke?’ said another.

‘Banger? I think you mean banging my head into the wall,’ commented a third.

Others tried to be more polite with their criticism.

‘Some talent is meant to remain hidden,’ a person wrote

‘Singing just isn’t for everyone,’ offered another.

Another supporter mocked how long the club had to prepare for the historic occasion.

They wrote: ‘Had 150 years to prepare for this?’

Despite the controversial version of the theme song, club faithful were very happy with the final result.

Hollywood star Eric Bana and fellow Saints diehard Molly Meldrum were at the stadium for the big occasion.

‘There’s a bit of anxiety (on such a big night) … we wanted to make the most of it,’ said coach Ross Lyon afterwards.

‘We tried not to get caught up in the week because there was a lot of honouring of past champions and moments within the club.

‘But our responsibility was to bring great effort tonight that, win or lose, our members and fans and everyone connected to the club would be proud of.

‘I was confident we would do that.’
