After King Charles III’s coronation, Camilla to be referred as Queen instead of Queen Consort
It is worth noting that before her passing, Queen Elizabeth II had expressed her desire that Camilla would be referred to as “Queen Consort” as a recognition of her loyal service.
Earlier this year, the Daily Mail quoted anonymous sources within Buckingham Palace as suggesting that Camilla might drop the title of Queen Consort in favour of the simpler title of Queen. The source stated that there was a belief within the palace that “Queen Consort” was a cumbersome title, and that it might be easier for Camilla to be known as “the Queen” once the time was right.
The source also pointed out that Prince Philip held the title of Prince Consort but was not commonly referred to as such. They added that while the Queen would still officially hold the title of Queen Consort, the palace would not prohibit anyone from calling her “Queen” if they wished to do so.
When Charles and Camilla announced their engagement in February 2005, Buckingham Palace released a statement indicating that Camilla would use the title of HRH The Princess Consort when Charles became king. However, this changed after the late Queen expressed her wish for Camilla to be known as Queen Consort during her platinum jubilee celebrations last year.
Nevertheless, palace officials are said to be looking at historical examples of titles that have dropped the word “Consort,” including the titles used for the King’s grandfather’s wife.FAQs
