A Design Lover’s Guide to Seville

Elsewhere, Trini Salamanca and Pablo Párraga are the artist-duo behind buzzy Las Ánimas. In the center of Seville, their workshop-cum-studio space is situated in a former barn surrounded by lush vegetation that houses other local artists, including sculptors, wood carvers, antique restorers, and craftsmen. By appointment, you can visit their workshop, where you’ll be offered a glass of wine or a cold beer as you peruse their selection of minimalist paintings, sculptures, and furniture available for purchase. Salamanca and Párraga credit Seville’s traditions and thriving artistic community as a large source of inspiration for their work. “The city is at a moment of transformation, as people begin to look beyond its festivals or historical monuments,” says Salamanca. “It has a very powerful contemporary scene, full of artists who cover all possible fields, from painting and design to cinema—all accompanied by an artisan tradition formed in traditional trades that are authentic masters, and heirs of a tradition that is still in full force today.”

Emerging artist Jaime Abaurre, known mostly for his works on paper, had lived all over the world—from London to Sydney to Rio de Janeiro—before deciding to return to his hometown and open his studio, Mas Cara Que Espalda, in March 2022. “When I got back to Spain, I was sure that I would need to go to Madrid or Barcelona to develop my art,” Abaurre says. “But it was a great surprise when I discovered that my hometown had evolved into an important art city.” His studio is situated in a building that was constructed at the beginning of the last century by Anibal Gonzalez, the same architect who built the Plaza de España. Inside, the exhibition space hosts his whimsical collection of linear and watercolor works featuring signature curvy faces inspired by cubism. Behind the exhibition space, you can tour his workshop divided into the drawing, design, painting, and storage sections.
