Olivia Rodrigo Tries Out a New Kind of Y2K Look
Like many of us, Olivia Rodrigo appears to be a fan of vintage Stella McCartney-era Chloé. The “Drivers License” singer attended the 2023 Billboard Women in Music Awards last night, where she presented Lana Del Rey with the Visionary Award. For the occasion, Rodrigo wore a pair of beige flared trousers from the enduring “Horses” collection McCartney designed for Chloé in spring 2001, and a brown leather strapless top by Rosetta Getty. Rodrigo was effusive about her love for Del Rey during her presentation, calling Del Rey’s modern classic “Video Games,” in her opinion, “probably the best love song of all time.”
During the release and promotion of the Grammy-winning Sour, Rodrigo curated a prim punk-rock aesthetic replete with miniskirts, baby tees, and shrunken cardigans. The looks often called to mind visions of early Avril Lavigne, another singer-songwriter Rodrgio has publicly expressed her admiration for. Here, however, Rodrigo has shifted her focus to another facet of Y2K style—something more attuned to what was trending on runways and in editorials during the trending era rather than on MTV and VH1.
One consistent throughline for 20-year-old Rodrigo? Her love for vintage fashion. The star has regularly used the red carpet as an opportunity to wear celebrated archival pieces from a variety of luxury brands and designers, including vintage Vivienne Westwood and Jean Paul Gaultier. Watching the star shift through different peaks of recent fashion history while curating an aesthetic her own is exhilarating to watch. There’s certainly more powerful reinterpretations and gentle updates to come soon.
