Opposition promises OPS, hiring of 10K HC-sacked teachers in Tripura
Addressing an election rally at Khayerpur, CPM leader Prakash Karat said the reintroduction of OPS would be the first decision the Left-Congress alliance would take if it is voted to power in Tripura. Tripura has over 1,04,600 regular employees and 80,800 pensioners.
Spokesperson for the agitating teachers, Piyali Chowdhury, said nearly 152 teachers have died due to various reasons. “We are agitating and demanding the reinstatement of our services. Former CM Biplab Deb had promised to return our jobs. But he failed to implement their commitments.”
The Tripura High Court had in 2011 and 2014 terminated the services of 10,323 teachers stating that there were discrepancies in the selection criteria. The decision was upheld by the Supreme Court on March 29, 2017. Later, the Left Front and the BJP government filed appeals before the Supreme Court and their services were extended up to March 2020.
The BJP government recently constituted a three-member committee headed by Justice AB Paul, a retired judge of the Tripura HC. The committee recommended the government reinstate the teachers through a simple notification.
BJP spokesman Nabendu Bhattacharjee said that the teachers lost their jobs due to the previous Left Front government’s recruitment policies.
Tipra Motha Party (TMP), headed by former royal scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barman told ET, “We will fight for the restoration of jobs of the sacked teachers.”.”Karat said, “In Himachal Pradesh, the Congress won the elections and reintroduced the old pension scheme. In Tripura, the same thing will be done once we are voted back to power”.
