Liam Smith laughs off elbow accusations with Chris Eubank Jr’s team considering appeal
‘NOBODY believes you!’: Liam Smith laughs off elbow accusations with Chris Eubank Jr’s team considering appeal for alleged illegal strike in the win over the 33-year-old… as the Liverpudlian urges his rival to ‘just take the rematch’
Liam Smith has laughed off claims from Chris Eubank Jr’s team that he illegally used his elbow in his victory over the 33-year-old.
Smith secured a shock victory over his bitter rival on Saturday, knocking him out in the fourth round of their heavily-anticipated contest in Manchester.
Eubank’s team have since considered an appeal to the British Boxing Board of Control against the result for an alleged use of an elbow in a combination that floored their fighter, leading to Smith urging Eubank to activate the rematch clause.
Liam Smith has laughed off accusations that he used his elbow to defeat Chris Eubank Jr last weekend
Smith is alleged to have used an elbow to knock Eubank down, but then caught him with a clean uppercut on the chin before ending the fight with a left hook
Smith has been accused of using an ‘illegal elbow’ to set up his fight-winning combination
Via Sky Sports, Smith said: ‘They are clutching at straws. As much as it might be a shock for people to see Chris sitting on his backside like that, just take it on the chin.
‘You lost, you got stopped, come back from it. Nobody believes you. You’re embarrassing yourself.
‘Go file your complaint by all means. If that’s the case, just take the rematch. What are you waiting for?
‘You’ve got three or four weeks to activate the rematch clause. If it was caused by an elbow, go ahead and activate it and let’s move on.’
Smith also tweeted a video of a man laughing upon the news breaking.
Eubank, though yet to comment on the accusation directly, didn’t mention an elbow following the defeat
Eubank didn’t appear to portion any of the blame for the loss to the alleged incident, telling Sky Sports after the fight: ‘I got caught, so to me I’m still able to perform and in my mind, I’m still the better fighter.
‘Obviously I don’t have much of an argument after a loss, but I have an argument to prove I’m the better fighter. It was a shot that landed, and it’s a fight I think the fans will still want to see further down the line.’
Following the fight, he tweeted: ‘Congratulations to Liam tonight, nice lil shot you caught me with there my boy. Felt like I could of kept going but referee is in charge & I respect his decision. We’ll get it on again soon .’
On a potential rematch, Kalle Sauerland of Wasserman Boxing said: ‘We’ve got a few weeks to activate that. We’ll take an internal discussion, see what the best way forward is for Jr and go from there.’
