Canadian trans bookbinder throws off JK Rowling’s name from Harry Potter books – Times of India

Canadian trans bookbinder and artist Laur Flom is removing author JK Rowling’s name off her Harry Potter books and reselling them without the name. The reason: the artist is doing this over the author’s alleged anti-trans rhetoric.
In 2020, in a tweet, author Rowling had expressed her disapproval of using the word “people” for people who menstruate, instead of the word “women”.

The author was also criticized for liking a tweet which called trans women as ‘men in dresses’. The author was accused of being transphobic and faced a strong backlash over her tweet. However, she later denied the allegations in an online article and expressed her interest in trans issues.
The furore has now led to this instance of her books being sold without her name.

Flom, 23, is changing the cover of the Harry Potter books and selling them for £140. Reportedly, the artist is donating some of this revenue to transgender charities.

The artist has mentioned that she is reselling the books without the author’s name for people who still want to enjoy Harry Potter without supporting the author JK Rowling.

“A lot of people have been asking me what the point of this is or what anyone actually gains from me removing her name from the books. And honestly, originally, there wasn’t a point or like anything really deep about this project. I started this project out of spite, and out of boredom.” she said on video-creating platform Tik-Tok.

The artist also mentioned, “But with this platform, and with people’s interest in the books, it’s become something that is bringing attention to a trans Jewish artist’s work, and will eventually bring about donations to trans charities.”

The covers and copyright pages are removed and replaced with alternative versions. The bookbinder also said that her intention was to create a ‘safe space’ for Harry Potter fans to find comfort in the books.
