JOHANNESBURG – Collaborating with non-profit organisation 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, Eastgate Shopping Centre is hosting a curated exhibition of masterpiece blankets crafted in Madiba’s honour over the years.

This year marks 10 years since the former president’s passing.

The organisation’s founder, Carolyn Steyn officially unveiled the show on Tuesday, which will run until 18 July – the former stateman’s birthday.

Shoppers are asked to take in the artwork on display and to contribute to the cause by giving wool, hooks, or needles; donating finished blankets, squares, and scarves; or adopting a knitter – which entails collaborating with someone who has the essential abilities but may not have the funds to purchase the material.

Since its inception in 2013, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day has distributed well over 167,000 handmade blankets, and hundreds of thousands of scarves to those in need – setting four Guinness World Records in the process.

They say their purpose is mobilising people locally and abroad to crochet and knit blankets and scarves, made with love, while demonstrating the true meaning of ‘Ubuntu.’

Over the years, the blanket movement has transformed into a phenomenon, capturing the attention of local and international celebrities, as well as corporates from across the globe.

For those who want to learn the complex craft of crochet, there will also be workshops available.

Eastgate said it is thrilled to host the amazing collection of blankets, which have the potential to significantly improve the lives of people.

“I encourage shoppers to enjoy perusing the masterpieces on exhibit and to support the project wholeheartedly,” said the shopping centre’s Saadiyah Kahn.
