6 of the Most Anticipated TV Shows Coming This Fall
AMC is betting big on the bloodthirsty this season, putting this series based on Anne Rice’s 1976 novel and subsequent sequels in prime position following The Walking Dead. The show, about a fraternity of elegant but tortured vampires, retains the original story-within-a-story framework, now set in the pandemic present with frequent flashbacks to 1910s New Orleans. But now a heavy vein of race and sexuality flows through the series; Louis (played by Jacob Anderson, known for his work as Grey Worm in Game of Thrones) is a Creole entrepreneur embarking on a torrid romance with Frenchman Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid). Expect iffy accents, men with long nails, and plenty of blood, nudity, and color contacts. —L.W.M.
Welcome to Chippendales (Hulu, November 22)
Have you ever wondered about the origin story of Somen “Steve” Banerjee, the Indian immigrant who went on to found the Chippendales male-stripping empire? If not, don’t worry, because Hulu went ahead and thought of it for you, casting Kumail Nanjiani in the lead role of this true-crime epic that boasts plenty of sex, drugs, and (gasp) murder to keep you hooked. Will this show have the pop-cultural staying power of Magic Mike, mixed with the ripped-from-the-headlines luster of American Crime Story? We’ll have to wait and see, but signs point to yes. —E.S.
