5G a ‘game changer’ to make factories smarter, speed up IT infrastructure: Wipro CEO Thierry Delaporte

Fifth generation (5G) technology is an opportunity to not only speed up the IT infrastructure business but also a game changer in the digital manufacturing world and has use cases like smarter factories, chief executive and managing director Thierry Delaporte told ET in a recent interview.

“Developing solutions leveraging 5G for our clients is critical…our strategy always is to stay as close as possible to the clients,” Delaporte said.

The Bengaluru-based software services exporter is working on a flexible model, if clients seek a hybrid setting of leasing the spectrum from telecom companies or pay per use of the technology, he said.

Wipro believes clients across industries such as automotive, manufacturing, media, and energy and utilities, will be able to leverage 5G to create differentiators in their businesses unlike the previous 3G and 4G technologies. The need for an ecosystem-led approach is critical for 5G, Delaporte added.

The company did not, however, specify whether it would apply for private 5G spectrum directly from the Department of Telecommunications.

L&T Technologies recently publicly expressed interest in taking the direct route for non-public captive networks, as it has applied for spectrum for its facility in Mysuru.

also said that 5G was a differentiator for overall productivity and efficiency and that the private sector should be allowed to take that spectrum at zero cost.

“We would request the government to give to our end users spectrum at zero cost,” Tech Mahindra chief executive CP Gurnani said during its post-earnings press conference last week.

Gurnani had told ET in a recent interview that technology companies should be allotted “free spectrum” to set up private 5G networks, arguing that it would increase self-reliance and boost Indian industry’s competitiveness in the global arena.

Non-tech companies have also been seeking non-public captive or private 5G networks to be directly allocated to them.

Private 5G is the way for India to show “hero” use cases of the technology, Intel’s India head Nivruti Rai said earlier, adding that the global chip maker was collaborating with enterprises to deploy 5G networks at their factories.
