‘5 minutes before toss, told him…’: Rohit Sharma praises KL Rahul’s mindset after match winning knock vs Pakistan
The Indian captain himself achieved an impressive half-century, laying a solid foundation for his team.
Virat Kohli exhibited his usual brilliance in pacing his innings, while India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, commended the comeback of KL Rahul, whose century proved equally vital in the team’s historic 228-run victory over arch-rivals Pakistan in Asia Cup Super 4 match held on Monday.
Kohli remained unbeaten on 122 runs, showcasing his exceptional skill, while Rahul’s unbeaten 111 runs were equally instrumental in propelling India to a record-equalling total of 356 for two. The duo’s remarkable partnership of 233 runs for the third wicket solidified India’s dominance.
Furthermore, Kuldeep Yadav’s exceptional performance, securing a five-wicket haul, dismantled the Pakistani batting lineup, setting the stage for India’s resounding triumph.
“Virat’s innings was brilliantly paced. And then KL, last minute to get back from injury and play 5 minutes before the toss. We told him to get ready. Shows the mindset of the player. Looking at how we batted, there were lots of positives with the openers and then Virat and KL,” said Rohit.

The Indian captain himself achieved an impressive half-century, laying a solid foundation for his team. He expressed utmost satisfaction as his team flawlessly executed all aspects of the game, leaving no room for improvement.
“It was a fantastic performance, right from yesterday. When we started, we knew the wicket was good and we had to adjust with the rain, the two experienced guys we knew they’d take time to get their eye in and then we can get going.”
Jasprit Bumrah seized a remarkable opportunity to showcase his bowling prowess in an ODI match, marking his return to the game following a successful back surgery.
“He looked good. He swung it both ways and he’s worked really hard for the last 8-10 months. Bumrah is only 27 (nearly 30), for him to miss games isn’t ideal but the way he bowled showed what he is all about,” Rohit said.
The skipper expressed his gratitude to the hardworking Premadasa ground staff for their relentless efforts in ensuring a complete game, despite facing multiple interruptions over the past two days.
“We just wanted to get out on the park, to get some game time. Lot of guys haven’t had that. That could only happen thanks to a great effort from the groundsmen. I know how tough it is to cover and remove covers from the whole ground. On behalf of the entire team, we would like to thank them.”
